I’m not gonna lie. I had been looking forward to the Doritos Locos taco for some time now. They had test marketed them in a couple cities, so I knew they were coming, but today was finally the national unveiling. I love Doritos. I love tacos. It should be a match made in heaven.
I’m pretty sure I was the person most eager to eat one of these tacos in the entire town. The cashier didn’t even know they were available yet until I asked for one. But the excitement was palpable when I sat down and unwrapped my neon treasure. The shell is exactly what you would expect: bright, orange and powdery. All you could smell was the shell. The taco meat was buried in a crunchy coffin.
But when I took that first excited bite, I didn’t get the powerful punch of flavor I expected. In all honesty, the Doritos shell doesn’t add much to the taco. You can feel the powder rolling around your tongue. You can also vaguely taste more cheesiness aside from the heap they already pile on the taco. By no means did it diminish the taco. If you like Taco Bell, you’re gonna love this. But I guess it didn’t live up to my soaring nacho cheese expectations.
Also, the thing is awkward to eat. It comes in a sleeve so your hands don’t start resembling the world’s saltiest carrots. But if you’re the type of person who eats a taco with a Doritos shell, what difference is a little powder on your fingertips? Plus, I still got Doritos residue on me anyway! You have to pull the taco forward in the sleeve to get at the next bite.
Overall, it was a pretty good Taco Bell experience. My hope is that they tweak the shell to make it cheesier and ditch the false modesty by getting rid of the sleeve. But I feel like there’s a little Chihuahua in the sky looking down with pride at the empire he helped build.
